Sammy Thomas showed up. All summer. Pre-game workouts before Oreland Summer League games. Small clinics where she could've coasted — she didn't. That's the whole story, really. But let's tell it anyway.
The Landscape
Girls high school basketball is different. Some programs don't even field a JV team — freshmen get thrown straight into the fire. And then there are the Catholic League powerhouses: Wood, Carroll, O'Hara, Neumann Goretti. They win, and they keep winning, because winning attracts winning. Top players. Generational talent. Parents who played there. Kids who came up through the same AAU programs together. It's cultural. Some of them are running the same sets year after year — watch a motion offense in a Catholic League gym and you'll hear "Villanova" called out like it's been in the playbook for decades. Because it has.
If you're not born into that pipeline, you have to build your own.
The Underdawg
Sammy is a kid you want to root for. An underdawg.
Around here, Dawg means something specific. A Dawg is a relentless competitor. A defender who hounds the ball. A player who doesn't shy away from contact and wants to move the needle every single day.
Her motivation? A 10 out of 10. I asked her, "What's your why?"
Her answer: she wants to compete with the best players in the league. And she learned something as a freshman — there are a lot of very good players. Some kids get discouraged by that. Sammy got to work.
Her summer: up at 5 AM, workouts in before most kids are awake. A 45-minute drive to shooting camp with Tim Legler. Camps at Villanova. Then the Oreland Summer League at night.
No girls game on the schedule tonight? Bring her anyway. She doesn't care who's on the floor. She hoops — and she commands respect from the boys. At this age, that's one of the biggest compliments there is.
A Throwback
And here's the part that makes Sammy a true throwback: she's a three-sport athlete. Soccer in the fall. Basketball in the winter. Softball in the spring. In an era where kids get pushed to specialize by middle school, she's living proof you can still do it the old way — compete year-round, in everything, and let each sport make you better at the others. That's how it used to be. That's how competitors are built.
Her Game
On the court, Sammy's game is developing the right way. She can knock down open shots — and now she's learning the next lesson: the difference between being a shooter and being a scorer. Shooters wait for the game to come to them. Scorers go get it. She's making that jump.
The Point
Nobody hands you a spot in this game. Sammy Thomas isn't waiting for a pipeline to carry her. She's building one — one 5 AM workout at a time.
Nazareth is lucky to have her — not just a player, but a student-athlete and a leader. And every young girl and boy out there can take a page out of her book:
Work daily. Remember your why.
